About My Gold Award Project

Hello! I'm Andrea and I'm a Girl Scout Senior working on my Gold Award. After doing some research it became evident that overcrowding pet shelters remain an issue for Hillsborough County, according to ABC News and WUSF, animal shelters across the country (including Florida) are dealing with overcrowding and high killing rates of pets. I would like
to educate people on why it is
important to take care of pets, so they don't end up in the shelter.

I have always been around animals, my aunt, who lives close to me, has three cats, chickens, and used to have ducks and cows. My grandma also has two dogs and a parrot and my girl scout leader has two dogs that were on the kill list at Hillsborough Pet Resource Center.
Unfortunately, I cannot have a pet of my own since my parents are separated. It would be hard for me to take care of animals because I am constantly going from house to house and wouldn’t have the time/resources to be a responsible pet owner. I would like to teach people how much responsibility and commitment it takes to be able to take care of a pet as well.
So ,that is why I chose to base my project around how to become a responsible pet owner to lessen the number of overcrowding shelters there are. Together we can learn how to prevent overcrowding shelters and become responsible pet owners!
